My Bookshelf About Mr. Alig FIRST YEAR TEACHING: 1994 FIRST YEAR TEACHING AT ELDER: 1994 EDUCATION: B.A. , ENGLISH, UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR, cum laude (1994); M.A. , ENGLISH (2001); State Teaching License: English (7-12) CLASSES (2020-2021): English I, Effective Writing After graduating from St. Xavier in 1990, I attended Xavier University, earning a B.A. in English as well as both a minor in philosophy and licensure in secondary education. I also hold an M.A. in English, which I earned at Xavier University in December, 2001. During my studies, I took courses in such subjects as Renaissance (non-Shakespearean) drama, Shakespearean drama, women’s literature, literary theory, narrative fiction, rhetoric, British Romantic poetry, metaphysical poetry, contemporary experimental American poetry, theories of writing and of teaching writing, African-American literature, metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, symbolic logic, and ethics. Since beginning my career at Elder in 1994, I have taught English I, English II, English III, Studies in Poetry, Film Critique, Literary Monsters, and Effective Writing. I also have served as chairperson of the English Department since 2007. In addition to my duties as department chairperson and classroom teacher, I also serve as an instructional mentor. As such, I am afforded the opportunity to collaborate with the other departmant chairpersons and my colleagues outside the English department. Last, I serve as co-director of the Honors Program. I stay busy outside the classroom, too: I am an assistant cross country coach. Additionally, I enjoy attending school sporting events (not only cross country meets), dances, and other extra-curricular activities.
